The all-new Audi SQ5 made its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show. It embraces Audi’s new Q5 design, with a couple changes being made in the engine department as well.
A supercharged V6, producing an output of 354HP and 346lb.-ft of torque, could be found in the previous generation of the SQ5. The new generation receives an aspiration conversion replacing the supercharger with a twin-scroll turbocharger. A number of notable benefits arise from this new 3.0 TFSI engine, including an overall lighter engine weight, increased torque output to 368lb.-ft. and a better fuel mileage of 8.3L/100km. All of these advantages translate into stronger performance numbers with less toll on the environment.
The new SQ5 can reach 100km/h from a standstill in an Audi claimed 5.4 seconds. Paired to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission, the gear shifts are quick and precise with lower gears while the upper gears are longer to reduce fuel consumption during highway speeds. A new feature in the transmission includes a free-wheeling mode that uncouples the transmission to increase fuel efficiency. As usual in Audi’s performance models, quattro all-wheel drive is standard and contributes to the driving dynamics of the SQ5. Quattro distributes engine power to either axle, with a slight rear-wheel drive bias, when required. A rendition of torque vectoring lightly applies brakes to inside wheels to provide more accurate, stable and agile turn-in. An optional sport differential and dynamic steering takes handling to the next level by attempting to mitigate understeer using active torque distribution between the rear wheels.
Adaptive dampers and a five-link, front and rear suspension further emphasizes the sporty driving characteristics of the Audi SQ5. Stiffness and other driving characteristics of the SQ5 can be adjusted within the Audi Drive Select system. An optional air suspension is available that allows the driver to also adapt ride height for specific driving situations.
Design language takes cues from the new 2018 Q5, with an added athleticism. To differentiate the “S” from the rest, a wider stance is achieved with standard 20-inch wheels and optional 21-inch wheels that shield 6-piston brakes. For those who appreciate choice, Audi Sport offers five exclusive 21-inch wheels. More sporty bumpers, trim, and exclusive S-grille serve as an indicator that this model is no regular Q5. LED lighting comes standard as well.
Technology, such as the Audi Virtual Cockpit, and other driver assistance features remain comparable to the new Q5. Leather appointment is one step up, with contrast stitching and sport seats dominating the interior. A massage function within the seats is also standard with the S-model. One has the choice to add carbon fibre trim in the cabin to embrace the sporty atmosphere of the SQ5.
The Audi SQ5 should be available for sale later in 2017.
