When it comes to motorcycle communication systems, Cardo stormed into the market with their Packtalk series, setting the benchmark for performance and innovation. Last year, I sampled the Packtalk Edge and came away impressed, so with the recent release of the Packtalk Pro, I’m setting out to help riders decide whether to stick with the tried-and-true Packtalk Edge, or upgrade to the newer, more advanced Packtalk Pro. In this article, I’ll compare both systems, looking at their features, performance, and overall value to help you make an informed decision.
Design and build quality
Both the Packtalk Edge and Packtalk Pro maintain a similar, sleek design. The only real difference at first glance is the satin black finish on the Pro. Both are built to withstand harsh riding conditions, with IP67-rated waterproofing ensuring they function in rain or dust. Both are lightweight and have a magnetic mounting point to make removal for charging and reattachment a breeze.
Key Difference: Honestly, it’s just the paint job. And at least to me, the charging port cover seems to close better on the Pro. More on that later.
Communication Technology
Both the Edge and Pro feature Cardo’s Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC) tech. This provides superior rider-to-rider communication compared to traditional Bluetooth systems. It allows up to 15 riders to connect within a range of about 1.6 kilometres between riders. If a rider disconnects, the mesh automatically readjusts to keep the group connected.
Key Difference: The Pro comes with Cardo’s Mesh 2.0 technology. It connects faster, it’s more stable, and range is slightly increased over the standard Edge. The extra range is particularly helpful for larger groups or those travelling through areas with more challenging terrain.
Sound Quality
Both systems deliver excellent sound thanks to JBL speakers designed specifically for motorcycle helmets. The Edge already features rich, crisp audio, which also adapts to external noise to provide the best sound experience at any speed.
Key Difference: The Pro takes sound quality a step further with enhanced JBL speakers, boasting deeper bass and more clarity. The speakers that come with the Pro are 45 millimetres, versus the 40-mm speakers that come with any other Cardo on the market today. Additionally, the Pro comes with a more advanced sound processor that adjusts more precisely to riding environments, whether you’re on the highway or in the city.
Voice Control and User Interface
Both units allow for hands-free operation via natural voice commands, such as “Hey Cardo.” This enables riders to control the device without taking their hands off the handlebars. Both devices support a wide range of commands, from adjusting the volume to answering phone calls.
Key Difference: The Packtalk Pro offers a more responsive voice control system, and is arguably more accurate at recognizing commands in noisy environments. This makes it more reliable for those who tend to ride in high wind, loud downtown traffic, or at—erm—higher speeds.
Battery Life and Charging
Both systems offer around 13 hours of battery life on a full charge. It’s typically more than enough for a full day of riding. They also feature fast charging via a USB-C port. Just 20 minutes of charging here amounts to 2 hours of use.
Key Difference: While both models offer similar battery performance, the Packtalk Pro comes with an upgraded battery management system. It’s better-suited for managing the energy features like Mesh, intercom, and music streaming consume, especially when running simultaneously. I also found that the charging port cover on the Pro was a lot easier to push back into place. The more I used the Edge, the more I found it a nuisance and could end up being concern for those who ride in the rain often.
App Integration and Firmware Updates
Both systems can be controlled and customized via the Cardo Connect app, which allows for easy adjustments to settings, firmware updates, and more. Both models support over-the-air updates.
Key Difference: The Pro offers a more intuitive app interface with additional customization options, such as fine-tuning sound profiles for the speakers and more control over group communication settings.
Price and Value
The Packtalk Edge has been on the market for some time. At about $420 CAD, it’s the more affordable option for riders who want top-tier communication tech without breaking the bank. The Pro, being the newer, slightly more premium model, retails for about $645 CAD, but it offers several improvements in communication, sound, and overall performance.
Which One Should You Choose?
Go for the Packtalk Edge if you’re looking for a reliable, high-performance communication system with excellent sound quality and solid connectivity. It’s perfect for riders who are happy with core DMC features and don’t necessarily need the upgrades. Plus, it’s about $225 less!
If you’re a tech-savvy rider who wants Cardo’s latest advancements in communication, premium sound, and better voice controls, choose the Packtalk Pro. To me, the improvements in Mesh 2.0 and the 45-millimetre JBL speakers justify the higher price, and I think the black paint job looks more sleek.
Both devices are exceptional in their own right, but the Packtalk Edge edges out the competition [You can have that one. —Ed.] on its upgrades alone, making it the go-to choice for serious riders who prioritize performance and premium features.
