Until now, the electric 718 Boxster and Cayman duo weren’t a matter of if, but rather when. But now, Porsche is reportedly thinking about axing them before they even arrive.
According to Bloomberg — hat tip to Car and Driver — Porsche is reconsidering following through with the fully electric 718 Boxster and Cayman replacements, citing “ballooning” development costs and mounting delays. Porsche first announced the electric 718 duo in 2022 with a 2025 on-sale date, and ended production of the current-gen models last year.
Speaking with Bloomberg on the condition of anonymity, Porsche execs involved in the development process say the decision to preemptively axe the 718 EVs boils down to balancing the books. Softening EV demand, not to mention the costs of reworking the electric 718 duo — the latest word is that Porsche is reworking the platform to accommodate an internal combustion engine — are the biggest factors.
Porsche has yet to make an official decision. Previously, the electric 718 duo were delayed until 2027.
