All good things must come to an end. No exceptions—not even for two of the most revered models in Porsche’s lineup.
After an eight-year run, Porsche will officially end production of the fourth-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman models this October. Frank Wiesmann, head of communications for Porsche Cars North America, confirmed the news to both Road and Track and Motor1, but remained tight-lipped on the timing of the Boxster and Cayman’s eventual electric replacements.
We all knew this day would come, but this confirmation no doubt stings for Porsche fans and car enthusiasts alike. In the Boxster’s nearly three-decade run and the Cayman’s 20-year run, this is the first time we’ll be without an immediate successor—and the first time in a long time where the 911 is your only choice for a Porsche sports car, period. An electric successor is in the works; rumour has it Porsche is aiming to launch the Boxster and Cayman EVs in 2027, but nothing is set in stone.
The move is also a contrast to what Porsche is doing with other models; the gas-powered Macan, for instance, is being sold alongside the Macan EV through 2026. And once it happens, it happens—Weismann says last year’s RS and Style Edition models were the last official hurrah.
Now, a moment of silence for our soon-to-be-fallen Porsche Boxster and Cayman. Yes, summer just started, but October will be here before we know it.
