I’ve always had a soft spot for BMWs. The blend of luxury, performance, and German engineering has always resonated with me, and this 2025 BMW M440i xDrive Coupe is no exception. This latest M440i strikes a balance between athletic handling and daily-driver comfort in ways that remind me why BMW is the benchmark — the ultimate driving machine, as it were.

The BMW 4 Series lineup sees a facelift — or LCI, in BMW terms — for the 2025 model year. Changes include minor but impactful updates to the front and rear bumpers, and new options for headlights and taillights with lasers, but more on that later. Other small changes include a new steering wheel for certain models like our top-trim M440i tester, and updates to colourways. You’ll burn a lot of time playing on the configurator.

The 2025 M440i xDrive, starting at just over $70,000, sits comfortably at the top of the 4 Series coupe lineup. Under the hood, you’ll find BMW’s venerable 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, producing 386 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, a slight increase from last years already impressive numbers thanks to a new mild hybrid system. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels, but the M440i isn’t just about raw power.

Sure, it’s brisk — it can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds — but it’s really about the refined and exhilarating power delivery BMW is known for. Power delivery is smooth and linear, turbo lag is non-existent, the beefy torque band makes driving the M440i a treat in any scenario, and above all, it sounds like a BMW should.

Handling is equally impressive, with precise steering and just enough numbness for daily driving, and the well-tuned suspension strikes a good balance between sportiness and comfort. The M440i stays composed and confident, whether you’re carving up a tight on-ramp or mindlessly commuting on the highway.

Visually, the 2025 M440i continues the bold but still-polarizing look first introduced in 2019. The large kidney grilles are still here — maybe I’m just used to it, but I don’t mind them now — giving it an … unmistakable look. Beyond the front end, the sleek lines and muscular stance look striking, and the laser tail lights that are fresh for this model year look wicked. They’re available as part of our tester’s $1,600 M Sport Pro package — which, funny enough, has nothing to do with “sports.” They’re easily my favourite part of this mid-cycle refresh; also included are adaptive LED headlights and Shadowline trim — which is BMW-speak for gloss black.

Inside, the M440i xDrive’s cabin is both well-appointed and driver-focused. High-quality materials abound; the leather looks and feels premium, the aluminum trim brightens up our tester’s mostly black interior, and there are soft-touch surfaces throughout. The seats are supportive and comfortable, with adjustable bolstering and thigh support. As with other BMW models, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment display live under one panel, and dominate the dashboard. The infotainment features BMW’s latest iDrive software; it’s intuitive, responsive, the graphics are sharp, and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus, the display now functions as a touchscreen, but if you prefer to keep it fingerprint-free, BMW still lets you use the rotary knob on the centre console.

Our tester also features the Premium package, which for $4,000, adds neat features such as a heads-up display and BMW’s Drive Recorder — which is essentially an integrated dashcam — as well as basics that should be standard for the money, like Comfort Access, lumbar support, and a 360-degree camera. Fortunately, driver assists such as lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking are standard, though adaptive cruise control is lumped into another package. They work seamlessly without being too intrusive.

The 2025 M440i xDrive starts at $72,300, but if you get carried away, it can quickly climb. Our tester, with the aforementioned Premium and M Sport Pro packages, as well as a few other niceties, came in at $81,180 as-tested with destination, but before any other fees and taxes. It’s a significant investment, but for those who appreciate its blend of performance, luxury, and tech, it’s good value.

The 2025 BMW M440i xDrive Coupe is a testament to what makes BMW special. Say what you will about BMW’s styling as of late, the M440i still offers a thrilling driving experience without sacrificing comfort or skimping on luxury, thanks to its tasty inline-six, great handling, and classy interior. If you’re in the market for a car that does it all — and reminds you that BMW still knows how to build an ultimate driving machine — the M440i should be at the top of your list.
