The redesigned, 2017 Mazda CX-5 was unveiled at the LA Auto Show. This generation will have a strong focus on providing “an SUV that all customers will enjoy”. The new CX-5 features a new design language, better driving dynamics system and an array of new technology to enhance the consumer experience.
The design of the Mazda CX-5 is bold and distinctive. A lower center of gravity and wider track gives the SUV a sporty stance. Thinner and lower profiled headlamps, connecting to a front grille with a new three-dimensional pattern, comprise the redesigned fascia. Around back a few adjustments are made to give the appearance of a more streamlined look, but most of the elements are carried over from last generation.
Inside, the interior focuses on providing ‘ambience’, ‘form’, and ‘texture’. Encompassing these traits, the seats are designed with voluminous depth to provide the utmost comfort and usability. The cabin design is forward flowing which provides a roomy ambience throughout the cabin. Three interior packages are available that provide different trim and colour options.
Engine options vary by market, however, North America will most likely get Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0 or SKYACTIV-G 2.5 direct-injection gasoline engines. The engines are paired with either the six-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic or six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission; with optional i-ACTIV AWD. Mazda’s SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS is the company’s new G-Vectoring Control system which optimizes the vehicle load on each wheel to achieve better body stability and vehicle responsiveness. The CX-5 embodies safety through Mazda’s i-Active Sense suite which includes a number of pre-accident warning and prevention systems.
The new CX-5 is stylish, functional and sporty. It will arrive in Japan first, followed by a global release, shortly after.
