Last year I spent a couple of weeks with BMW’s new volume-selling X3 crossover SUV, and I loved it. Its blend of comfort, practicality, technology, performance, efficiency and impressive powertrain refinement made it a fabulous vehicle that could do everything a reasonable person could possibly want to a high caliber. But, what if you’re, perhaps, not the most reasonable person? What if you need your well-executed family vehicle to also be very fast? You might be the sort of person who the 2026 BMW X3 M50 is for.

Exterior & interior design

Being that this is only the second year of this X3, changes for this 2026 BMW X3 M50 are very subtle, but not invisible. In response to some complaints about disappointing perceived quality on some parts of the interior, some trim elements have been updated to look and feel more upscale. 

The X3 logo on the doors is now an outline instead of block letters, the plastic trim it lives on has a smoother finish, and the door handle is finished in a dark silver to match the metallic trim on the dashboard. This area of the door is right in the driver’s line of sight and dramatically accentuated by ambient lighting; it was a smart move to spruce it up a bit.

Otherwise, it’s more or less the same space it was before, which isn’t bad at all. It’s practical and well thought-out with a large central storage tray that incorporates a wireless charging pad, there’s an abundance of room in the front and rear, and I love the two-tone Amber and Atlas Grey leather treatment, with a woven textile dashboard for a little extra pop.

Infotainment & driving tech

The X3’s user interface is supported by the same crisp and responsive curved ultrawide display that houses both the center infotainment screen and the gauge cluster. It’s powered by iDrive 9, which works well and is easy to live with once you’ve taken a beat to learn it’s many functions, (although I still don’t understand why they chose to make the previously sublime XM radio controls clunkier). It can be controlled via the screen itself, the now-outgoing iDrive rotary knob with shortcut buttons, or voice commands – all of which work very well.

This tester was fitted with BMW’s Drive Assistant Professional, a technology we’ve affectionately nicknamed Bavarian Jesus on our podcast, because once you’re on the highway, you just let go and Bavarian Jesus will take the wheel. It is one of the not the best hands-free driving systems on the market, able to smoothly follow traffic, lanes, and curves without any awkwardness, and it will even change lanes if you so desire. For you non-believing heathens, it will also clearly telegraph when it feels like you should take the wheel for a spell. Last point on this topic: the raft of parking assists and automated parking functions remain the best in the business.

Powertrain

Having said all that, you’re probably not shelling out (more on that later) for an X3 M50 to let it drive and park itself. You’re probably not terribly interested in quite-reasonable fuel efficiency, either (9.4L/100km observed). No, you’re thinking about one of these because you want to drive the snot out of it. You want this X3 M50 because it has BMW’s living-legend B58 turbocharged 3.0-Litre straight-six engine, producing 393 horsepower and 428 foot-pounds of torque. You want this because it has launch control, and a boost mode, and can snap to 100km/h in four seconds. You, obviously, need this capability, because you aren’t always the most reasonable person, and that’s okay.

Similarly, you also need the sport-tuned ZF 8-speed automatic with impeccable calibration and telepathic shifts, and the adaptive M Sport suspension and drive modes to enable all of it to make the most of your (infrequent, of course) unreasonable tendencies. With everything set to maximum delinquency, the X3 gets louder, stiffer, sharper, more theatrical, and above all, fun.

Driving impressions

The steering is sharp, the brakes are well judged and powerful, and the whole chassis communicates well. The front and rear ends are well balanced and dance with each other well, and communicate with you in turn. It makes the right noises, has the right responses, and does the right things. It will let you have fun, and it will engage in seriously unreasonable behaviour before subtly pulling you back to reality, without ruining the mood.

And then, when you have to be reasonable, it’s quite lovely. The engine has enough meat to it to sound properly substantial (even with the digital “Iconic Sounds” turned off), but when you’re just cruising at a steady speed, it is so slick as to be imperceptible; it might as well be electric. It’s clever mild-hybrid system makes start-stop fuel saving impossibly slick, and it returned an average fuel use of a quite-reasonable 9.8L/100km – a far cry from the base model, but still sensible.

The only noteworthy compromise is the ride quality. To be clear, it’s not bad at all, and it’s miles better than the outgoing X3 M, as these new adaptive shock absorbers have greater range and can be softer, but there is still a distinct sharpness to it that the base X3 doesn’t have. If this is only the cost of having so much performance hiding behind its sensible crossover facade, I’d say you’re doing alright.

The Money Question

But, the sharper ride and slightly harder drinking habit isn’t the only cost of the 2026 BMW X3 M50. This tester rings in at $96,900, which is a whopping thirty grand more dear than the mostly-base (but still lovely) X3 30 I adored last year. I am not saying I think it’s a poor value by any means – it totally outshines both a Mercedes GLC and a Porsche Macan, offering more in every regard for less of an outlay. The only vehicle that might give me any pause in this price class of car is the Volvo XC60 T8, which gives up a little bit of performance edge in exchange for being a little more sensible.

Wrap it up

Perhaps some of you reading this might be adherents to the old testament of Bavaria, only just now considering letting go of your E39 because you’ve accepted that it’s more iron-oxide than iron, and are reluctantly contemplating a modern BMW because you have to, because you’re at a point in your life where you have to at least pretend to be reasonable.

If you’re locked into a single-car solution, I’m not sure there’s another car that offers the performance, practicality, luxury, and technology that this X3 M50 does all at once. In my mind, this 2026 BMW X3 M50’s only real hard competition is the base X3 30, because it’s such a screaming value in the luxury segment; it’s so reasonable that it’s hard to argue with. You have to be a little unreasonable to decide you need this, but I won’t judge you for it. We’re all a little unreasonable sometimes.
