It won’t be a new MR2, that’s for sure, but Toyota is working on a new model, as evidenced by a mysterious teaser image the automaker dropped today.
Trouble is, aside from the cryptic photo and equally cryptic promise that “something new is on the horizon,” we don’t know much else about what Toyota is cooking up. But if we put on our thinking caps, we can at least point ourselves in the right direction.
It shows a blocky silhouette of the rear end of a tall SUV, but the only details we can make out are the roof rails, tall beltline, somewhat flared fenders, and the lightbar running across the tailgate. It’s reminiscent of the RAV4, but it just came out, so we’re automatically ruling that out.
It’s not a Corolla Cross, either. It’s too new, having just been refreshed for 2026, and it’s too small. Ditto the Grand Highlander, 4Runner, and Sequoia — they’re all too new, despite looking about-right for the size.
That leaves us with the regular Highlander. Having carried over mostly unchanged since 2020, the non-grand Highlander is more than overdue for an update, doubly so with the Grand Highlander eating into its sales. Its big brother offers a much more usable third row, a more premium interior, and a more efficient and powerful hybrid powertrain.
Alas, time will tell. Toyota hasn’t even said when this new model is coming out, so we’ll know when we’ll know.
