Volvo’s EV lineup is growing with a new, electric version of its most popular model in the most important segment. Enter the 2027 Volvo EX60.

The 2027 EX60 follows the same basic recipe as Volvo’s other electric efforts. Like the EX40 and EX90, the EX60 is essentially a fully electric version of the gas-fuelled XC60. It’s all there visually — the EX60 wears the familiar “Thor’s hammer” headlights, the traditional grille and logo treatment, and the signature vertical tail lights — wrapped up in a slightly more aerodynamically efficient package.

But there’s a lot more at play with the 2027 EX60 than meets the eye. For starters, it also debuts Volvo’s new SPA3 modular platform architecture. It follows the same idea — it’s still scaleable, but now, Volvo uses megacasting to simplify the production process, and the battery serves as a structural component to the chassis that’s lighter, takes up less space, and charges faster.

Volvo is offering the EX60 with three powertrain configurations — or two, depending on where you live. The P6 will be the entry level setup, using a single, rear-mounted electric motor rated at 369 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The P10 sits a step above that, bringing a second electric motor, and therefore all-wheel-drive int the mix. Here, you’re working with 503 hp and 524 lb-ft of torque. The P12 sits atop the EX60 lineup, putting out 670 horses and 583 lb-ft of torque.

Volvo is also offering the EX60 with three battery configurations. The P6 uses an 80 kWh battery pack, while the P10 and P12 ups the capacity to 91 and 112 kWh, respectively. Range for the P6 is estimated at a hair under 500 kilometres, while the P10 can do up to 515. The range-topping EX60 P12 goes the furthest, at up to 640 km on a single charge.

All EX60s come with a Tesla-style NACS port for fast-charging at speeds of up to 400 kW, allowing for a 10-to-80 per cent charge on P10 variants in 18 minutes. Granted your real-world experience will differ, as relying on public charging infrastructure is often a crapshoot in terms of charging speeds. For Level 2 charging, all EX60s use a 19.2 kW on-board charger. Alas, in Canada, Volvo will only offer the P10 and P12 variants.

Inside, the 2027 EX60 bears a strong resemblance to the EX30 and EX90, playing into Volvo’s minimalism shtick with clean lines, high-end materials, and a 15.1-inch OLED touchscreen serving as the centrepiece for the infotainment. We weren’t keen on the EX30’s single-central-display layout, so the EX60 gains a second, smaller display immediately ahead of the steering wheel. Naturally, Volvo offers their 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and the EX60 is marginally larger than the XC60 in all directions, but not by much.

Along with the standard EX60, Volvo is doing a mildly rugged Cross Country version. It rides about an inch higher by default, can be raised another inch-ish for even more ground clearance, wears the requisite “off-road-ready” dress-up, and can even wade through 17.7 inches of water.

The 2027 Volvo EX60 will start at $77,500 in Canada when it hits dealers this fall.
