Take a look back to 1991. Mark Wahlberg was still Marky Mark, The Silence of the Lambs took home the Oscar for best picture and customers could walk into a Toyota dealer and drive off the lot in a brand new Camry AllTrac. Now, for the first time since Mulroney was our Prime Minister, the all-wheel-drive Camry is back.
This time it isn’t called AllTrac, but it is equipped with the same all-wheel-drive system as the RAV4. It can route up to fifty per-cent of power to the rear axle and comes attached to a 202-horsepower 2.5-litre inline-four and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Camry XSE AWD models get a bump to 205 horsepower. Sadly, Toyota’s fire-breathing 301-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 isn’t available in AWD format. Believe it or not, the Camry AWD has the same trunk depth as the front-wheel-drive model despite the addition of a rear differential and weights just 165 lbs. more than FWD cars.
On the outside, there isn’t much to differentiate the AWD models from the FWD models other than a subtle AWD badge. Inside, all AWD Camry models gain an electronic parking brake while AWD Camry SE Upgrade, XLE and XSE models come with a heated steering wheel as an extra measure against the cold.
2020 Camry AWD models will arrive at dealerships in early Spring, with pricing to be announced closer to launch. For those seeking all-wheel-drive grip without the muddled reflexes of a crossover, the 2020 Camry AWD may be worth a look.
