With years of history to back it, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is updated with more capability, technology and style. For 2019, Mercedes-Benz is taking what is fundamentally good with the G-Class – the suspension – and making it even better.
Mercedes wanted to direct even more focus to both on- and off-road capability. In order to do so, collaboration with Mercedes-AMG was necessary to design a versatile suspension. Part of the efforts included raising the axles for improved off-road capability, adding a double-wishbone suspension for better handling on-road and including five driving modes in their Dynamic Select. One notable mode added to the Dynamic Select is G-Mode which improves the off-road handling characteristics by adjusting dampening, throttle input, gearing and steering when any indication of off-roading is detected. These additions provide 240mm of ground clearance and appear alongside the standard ladder-type frame, three 100-percent differential locks and a low range off-road gear.
Under the hood of the new G 550 is a traditional 4.0-litre V8 producing 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a new 9-speed transmission adapted for off-road use. Featuring wider gears helps the vehicle achieve better fuel efficiency at lower speeds. From the exterior, the G-Class maintains its same dimensions and iconic design. Slight modifications have been made to lights and mirrors to give them a modern appearance and improve aerodynamic efficiency.
Inside, the G-Class introduces modern appointments but makes no compromises with luxury. Premium leather covers most surfaces of the interior making for comfortable travels. Interestingly, Mercedes shaped interior parts to mimick exterior components such as air vents shaped as headlights and speakers shaped as the turn signals. Lastly, the G-Wagon receives the updated 12.3” Widescreen Cockpit that can be found inside the E-Class and S-Class. Driver assistance functionality is also available as an option.
