For many of us here in North America, we know the sportiest Hyundai to be the Elantra Sport. However, for some time now, Hyundai has had a high-performance division overseas, branded as “N”. Today at the North American International Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled its new Veloster as well as its Veloster N.

There are many things that set apart the Veloster N from its siblings. The most notable difference can be found under the hood. A larger 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder than that in Veloster Turbo pushes 275 HP and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. This motor is paired to a short-throw 6-speed manual that includes downshift rev matching. Helping to establish its presence as an “N”, a multi-mode active exhaust system emits snaps, crackles and pops during spirited driving.Large-31057-2019VelosterN

The Veloster N also features a revised suspension to deliver more precise handling and body control. A multi-mode suspension uses load transfer control to shift weight and deliver a better driving experience. Available is a limited-slip differential branded the “N Corner Carving Differential” which improves launch performance, reduces understeer and increases maximum cornering speed with torque-vectoring. For those who like customization, N vehicles will come with a “N Grin Control System” that gives the driver a range of modes to select from to match their driving preferences. Bringing the car to a stop are optional 13.6” performance rotors.Large-31048-2019VelosterN

From the outside, the Veloster N is notably different. It features a unique N front fascia and grille along with air ducts for better brake cooling. It also features N-design side sills, rear bumper with integrated diffuser and a spoiler to top it all off. Dual high performance exhaust pipes protrude from the rear bumper. Topping it off as a high-performance vehicle are 18” or 19” wheels wrapped in Pilot SuperSports or Pirelli P-Zero tires, respectively.Large-31051-2019VelosterN

Inside, Hyundai continues the N styling. N-branded sport seats with bolstering are designed to hold the driver during spirited driving. Also making an appearance are an N steering wheel, shift knob and instrument cluster all sealed with “N-design blue stitching”. A cool, race-oriented feature is the progressive sequential shift indicator that lets the driver know when they’re approaching the optimal shift point.

It’s exciting to see what future vehicles Hyundai introduces as its entry into the high performance segment here in North America.
