Honda has finally pulled the covers off its production model Civic Type R. This 5 door, hot hatch will be the first Type R in North America branded under the Honda, as opposed to Acura, name.
A performance oriented driving experience is the primary goal of the Type R. This is achieved through a 2.0 liter turbocharged i-VTEC 4-Cylinder, that will be built in the USA, and output 306HP and 295lb.-ft. of torque. The motor will be paired to a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission that will automatically generate throttle blips to keep the car in the proper rev range.
The chassis will feature exclusive springs, dampers and bushing including a Dual-Axis front suspension and limited slip differential, to improve cornering and prevent torque steer. Bringing the Type R to a stop will be large 13.8” Brembo rotors and 4-pot calipers. Furthering the driving experience will be the option of three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and +R. Each of these modes will fine tune the steering, throttle response, transmission settings and other control systems to adapt to different driving scenarios.
The exterior of the Type R will feature an aggressive bodykit that includes a large rear wing and front air dams, Type R specific wheels, a vented hood and the iconic red badges. Inside, the Type R will feaure a 7-inch Touchscreen with navigation, Type R embossed red sport seats and other Type R badged interior features.
The Type R will prove to be a worthy competitor in the hot hatch and sedan market. Pricing will be available in the near future.
