Audi’s entry-level model, here in North America, has just been announced to receive a “technology update”. Along with this update, a few minor tweaks have been made to the design and other aspects of the vehicle. This refresh is aiming to keep the styling of the A3 up-to-date with the rest of its siblings.

Probably the most noticeable difference made to this model is the exterior. Audi has opted to make the headlights more sharp using a flat, jagged bottom design. The headlights incorporate Audi’s signature Matrix LED, a first for the A3/S3 line, as an available option. This, in combination with a new grille and bumper style, provides a more aggressive and sporty fascia. Around back, a redesigned diffuser and LED tail lights help capture the lines of the A3/S3 more elegantly. Notable colour options being introduced include Ara Blue, Cosmic Blue, Tango Red and Vegas Yellow, just to name a few. New wheel choices are also offered ranging from the base 16″ wheels up to 19″ wheels.

The interior remains largely unchanged. Keeping with the trend, the A3/S3 receives Audi’s Virtual Cockpit driver information gauges, as well as a newly designed three-spoke steering wheel which can be heated at the push of a button. To provide additional comfort, Audi now offers the choice to add a massage function to the seats in the new A3. Inductive charging and Audi’s Smartphone Connect interface is new in the A3/S3 and provides additional connectivity with the driver’s smartphone. The MMI interface is updated as well, and thankfully, Audi has decided to stick with a 7″ retractable, (now) touchscreen (as opposed to a tablet looking console, like found in the A4). Overall, the A3/S3 maintains a premium fit and finish on the inside.

Engine compartment

Under the hood, Audi has decided to make a few changes. The A3 comes available with 6 engine options in Europe including an E-Tron as well as G-Tron. For North America however, we can expect to see the traditional 3 choices (1.8T, 2.0T and E-Tron) along with a possible TDI variant. Audi claims that the 2.0T is completely new, and in the A3, it is expected to produce 190 HP and 235 lb.-ft. of Torque. The 2.0T will be paired with a new 7 speed S-Tronic transmission; an upgrade from the 6 speed dual-clutch found in its predecessor. Steering and suspension remains unchanged. Moving over to the S3, the 2.0T’s power is boosted by 10 HP and 15 lb.-ft. of Torque, resulting in a total output of 310 HP and 295 lb-ft. of torque.

The A3 goes on sale in Germany starting early May, with the first deliveries arriving in the Summer. North America should follow, not too long after. Pricing should remain the same. If we’re lucky enough, we may even be able to see the emergence of the RS3 before the end of the year. Fingers crossed.
