Nissan’s 2016 family-friendly Sentra has made its Canadian debut at the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto.
A slew of technologies is available in the 2016 Sentra to keep you and your passengers safe. These include Intelligent Cruise Control, Forward Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning and the brand-new Active Understeer Control. The latter tech uses intelligent control logic and high-response brake actuators to lightly brake the front wheels during corning.
The exterior resembles Nissan’s Altima and Maxima with its new front fascia, grille, fenders and hood. For a more premium look, Nissan has also installed boomerang-like tail lights and two new 17-inch wheel designs for two of their models.
Speaking of which, the four-door sedan is available in six models: S 6MT, S Xtronic, FE+ S, SV, SR and SL. Besides the models, the Sentra also has seven packages available. This includes the Technology Package, the SR Premium Package, the Style Package (only for the SV model), SL Premium Package, Driver’s Assist Package, All Weather Package and 16-inch Alloy Wheels Package. While these may sound like model and package overkill, it might be the easiest way to decipher what best suits you or your family’s needs.
For example, if you’ve always liked the Sentra but don’t have a family and enjoy a sportier-look, the SR is definitely for you. This model features low-beam projector headlights, chrome exhaust finisher, unique 7-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and a sporty interior finish. You may also choose to have the SR Premium Package, which would also give you a power sliding glass roof, a Bose Premium sound system with eight speakers and half a dozen safety technologies.
For the family-oriented, the 2016 Sentra S, FE+S and SV are all excellent choices. The SV model boasts a standard Siri Eyes Free technology as well as a new meter display with chrome accents (a little sporty), Advanced Drive-Assist Display and new seat fabric. The SL model, possibly the most luxurious, offers standard leather seats that heat up, have 2-way lumbar support, an auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink Universal Transceiver and Dual Zone Automatic Temperature Control.
Every Sentra model comes with a 1.8-litre, four cylinder engine mated to an advanced Xtronic transmission with sub-planetary gear. The S model can either come with the standard engine or a 6-speed manual transmission if it pleases you. Both of these engines are surprisingly fuel efficient: the 6-speed is rated at 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg at highway speeds. The Sentra FE+ S grade achieves 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway, while the last three models are rated at 29 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.
The Sentra’s base model, the Sentra S 6MT, clocks in at just under $16,000 USD, about $22,000 CAD.
