Porsche 718 hits New York Auto Show

The Porsche Boxster and Cayman receive a new name and a physical refresh!

Porsche has decided to change the name of its 981 series of cars, also known as the Cayman and Boxster. This refresh can unofficially be known as the 981.2. Naming wise, Porsche has decided to add some numbers into the nameplate, so now the official name now is the Porsche 718 Boxster (S)/Cayman (S). That’s quite a lot to take in. Thankfully, Porsche made this refresh easy to understand.P16_0071_a4_rgb

The Porsche 718 comes back with a 300 horsepower 2 liter flat four, while the 718 “S” uses a 2.5 liter turboed flat four pushing 350 horsepower. Overall, this system is 14% more efficient while still upping power by 35HP. The 718 Boxster, equipped with a Sport Chrono Package and PDK transmission hits 100km/h in 4.5 seconds where as the S hits it in 4 seconds. Helping put the power to the ground and bring the vehicle to a stop are upgraded brakes and a retuned suspension. The steering is said to be 10% more direct than previous generations.

Porsche claims that every body component, except the glass, luggage compartment and convertible roof is changed. On first glance it is evident that a facelift has been done. The front has been resculpted and has a wider, more muscular appearance. Larger cooling intakes help reduce the heat of the turbos. Redesigned headlights with integrated LED running lights are another distinguishable. The rear maintains similar features as its predecessor with redesigned light housings, providing a 3D effect. Inside, Porsche has also refreshed the dash panel and PCM infotainment system.

Additional options help provide a more driver oriented ride, such as the PASM suspension management system which gives the driver the ability to adjust certain suspension settings. The Porsche 718 is expected to reach dealers in June 2016 at a MSRP of $56,000US.
