Ram's heavy-duty 2500 Power Wagon finally gets the Cummins turbodiesel

Ram’s corporate shot-callers may be in put-the-Hemi-back-into-everything mode, but the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon gives buyers something else they’ve wanted for a few years now. At long last, you can finally get a Power Wagon with the Cummins diesel engine.

Ram lets you choose between gas and diesel throughout the rest of the Heavy Duty lineup, but the 2500 Power Wagon is their biggest, toughest, and most off-road-ready version of their biggest and toughest half-ton truck. But the standard front winch resulted in one big limitation: it blocked the intercoolers required by the Cummins turbodiesel.

The Rebel scratched that itch up to a certain extent, but that changes for 2027. Now, Ram will let you spec the big-and-tough 2500 Power Wagon with the big-and-tough 6.7-litre Cummins turbodiesel inline-six. That means 430 horsepower and 1,075 pound-feet of torque, compared to 405 hp and 429 lb-ft from the gas-fed 6.4L normally aspirated V8. This also bumps towing capacity to 20,000 pounds, but the gassers still offer more payload.

Along with the new engine, the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon gets a new 3.42 rear axle ratio, an optional gooseneck for even heavier-duty towing, and self-levelling air suspension in the back.

Everything else carries over from the gasser into the diesel Power Wagon — the 34-inch all-terrain tires, the e-lockers, the solid axles, the butch off-road-tough dress-up inside and out, you name it. Except for the front winch, of course.

Ram hasn’t announced pricing for the Cummins-powered Power Wagon just yet. But if you’re willing to trade the winch for a lot more torque, they’ll be hitting dealers this summer.
