Hot on the heels of its updated Subaru counterpart, Toyota’s electric crossover—you may remember it as the bZ4X—now follows suit with a round of updates of its own.
Leading the laundry list of updates for 2026 is a name change. Toyota has officially ditched the somewhat confusing, alphabet-soup bZ4X nameplate, now referring to its one-and-only EV it sells in the U.S. and Canadian markets simply as the bZ. But wait, there’s more: Toyota has also crammed in a number of powertrain, style, and quality-of-life updates, too.
For starters, all-wheel-drive bZ models gain a larger 77 kWh battery pack. It’s a sizeable upgrade from the previous 57.7 kWh unit, offering up to 460 kilometres of range on the mid-range XLE AWD trim, and 430 km on the range-topping Limited. Toyota also tweaked the bZ’s axles, now using silicone carbide semiconductors to do their thing. Along with more range, these updates now bump total output to 338 horsepower. The base, front-wheel-drive bZ XLE keeps the previous single-motor, 57.7 kWh setup, but the larger battery is optional.
In order to recharge that battery, Toyota switched out the previous CCS charge port for a Tesla-style NACS connector, meaning you can now access Tesla’s massive Supercharger network. Here, Toyota says you can expect a 10-to-80 per cent charge in about half an hour. That’s about the same as before, but at least road tripping ought to be a little less nerve-wracking.
Rounding out the updates for 2026 is freshened styling inside Toyota reworked the bZ’s front and rear fascias, and the vast expanses of body cladding can now be colour-matched for a much cleaner look, albeit only with specific exterior specific colours. Inside, an upsized 14-inch touchscreen display takes centre stage on the dashboard.
Toyota hasn’t dished pricing details just yet, but the updated 2026 bZ should be hitting dealers across the country—rather than just B.C. and Quebec, as before—later this year.
