Nissan’s latest entry into the compact crossover segment is a fantastic example of the “new” Nissan. Having stagnated amidst management issues for the past decade the revamped lineup has impressed us with each new model. We spent a week with the 2023 Nissan Rogue Platinum to get another look at what the revitalized automaker has to offer.

Sharing a platform with the excellent new Mitsubishi Outlander the Nissan Rogue boasts a bold and sleek design, a welcome departure from the more conservative styling of previous generations. The front end features a prominent V-motion grille flanked by LED headlights and daytime running lights. For 2023 Rogue is available in eight colors, including four two-tone offerings, like the classy two-tone Champagne Silver applied on our test vehicle. The glossy black roof and 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels give the Rogue a strong modern presence.

Moving inside, the 2023 Nissan Rogue Platinum continues to impress. Materials used throughout the interior are of high quality, giving the Rogue a premium feel. Quilted semi-aniline leather appointed seats pair well with the beautiful brushed aluminum trim, a huge improvement over the typical Piano black. It has the look and feel of premium home audio equipment which is a big win in our book. The two-tone dashboard features a chocolate brown and black combo with wood trim for an extra touch of class.

All the modern creature comforts are here – heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, and dual panoramic moon roof; the Rogue really has it all. Cargo room is bountiful and easy to use with the motion activated liftgate, and rear seats that fold remotely with a pull of a lever to make full use of the 2,098-liters of space.

The Platinum trim includes a Bose premium audio system upgrade with ten high performance speakers including a dual driver woofer. While there aren’t a lot of bells and whistles to play with other than a surround feature, the system delivers clear sound quality synonymous with Bose. Infotainment is operated through a nine-inch touchscreen display that easy to use and responsive, though Nissans user interface graphics design is long overdue for an overhaul. The system supports both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also exclusive to the Platinum trim is an all digital 12.3-inch digital dash with and a head up display to keep tabs on a plethora of information at a glance.

Base Rogues have a 2.5-liter normally aspirated four-cylinder engine under the hood, but the higher trim levels get a trick 1.5-liter turbocharged three cylinder that packs a bigger punch with better fuel economy to boot. Rated at 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft. of torque the little 3 banger is good fun to drive with a mean growl. Using a unique variable compression system, the engine shifts between extremely high compression under low loads to very low when the turbo is feeding it all the boost it can handle. Paired to Nissan’s latest Xtronic CVT, acceleration is smooth and effortless, and fuel sipping to boot.

The little 1.5-liter is rated at 8.4L/100km city, 6.8L/100km highway, and 7.7L/100km combined. We averaged 8.6L/100km with mostly city driving. On highway commutes 6.2L/100km was not uncommon, impressive for a non-hybrid powered SUV.

All Rogues come standard with an Intelligent AWD system with drive modes selectable through the center console rotary dial – Auto, ECO, Snow, Off-Road and Sport. Rogue operates primarily in front-drive mode to conserve fuel, only engaging the rear wheels when required which you can watch in real time with a nifty digital gauge. We found the Rogue to be nimble and easy to drive with its independent strut front suspension and multi-link rear setup, though big bumps did upset the rear end. Equipped with ProPilot Assist, Rogues cruise control kept us centered in the lane and managed distance effortlessly in stop and go traffic making for a much less stressful commute.

Nissan’s latest Safety Shield 360 suite of safety features also comes standard with all Rogues. This includes emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear cross traffic alert, automatic rear braking, blind spot warning, and high beam assist which automatically deactivates high beams when an oncoming vehicle is detected.

The base Rogue “S” starts at $33,248 and climbs up through 5 trim levels before reaching the “Platinum” trim priced at $43,748. The Two-tone paint job on our tester cost an additional $630, bringing the as-tested price up to $44,378. Overall, it’s very hard to find anything at fault with the 2023 Nissan Rogue Platinum. The compact crossover SUV boasts a stylish exterior, modern cabin, and an outstanding powertrain. The Rogue sets high water benchmark in its segment with everything your could ask for in a compact SUV in 2023, a shining example of what the revitalized Nissan is capable of.
