For 2016, BMW will be performing a mid-cycle update for the current generation of their popular luxury sedan, the 3-Series. Due out in the second half of 2015, it does appear that the changes to the styling will be minor. As we can see from the spy shots of this prototype, it is clear that the bumpers and the exterior lighting are undergoing the facelift operation.

Inside, look for new trim options as well as an updated infotainment system should be rounding out the changes. Though it is still yet to be official, it is possible that the 2016 3-Series will feature BMW’s new four and six-cylinder engines based on the Modular design first seen in the German Automaker’s B38 three-cylinder engine. This Modular design features individual cylinder displacement of 0.5 litres, with the addition of fuel-injection, variable valve timing, as well as turbochargers.

A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine based on this design, the B48, is featured in the MINI Cooper and the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. A 3.0-liter six-cylinder is also planned and will likely power the 2016 3-Series, depending on trim level. By introducing this power-plant design, the German Automaker is making strides to obviously improve efficiency without sacrificing performance.

Further, with the introduction of the new engines, it is possible we will see the long standing 328i and 335i badges to be replaced by 330i and 340i badges, respectively. In addition, a new plug-in hybrid model should be launched. For the meantime, the new 328d should keep the current model’s diesel engine.
