Following an unexpected image leak yesterday, BMW has decided to fully release the second generation if its X6 crossover-coupe.

The redesigned X6 shares its platform and many other things with the latest X5, a relationship that is clear in the shared headlights, twin-kidney grille and hood. The X6 establishes itself as the style-oriented sibling to the X5, with a downward sloping roofline among other unique touches, including upswept character lines over the rear wheels and much more sleeker-looking taillights.

The X6 also attains a model-specific lower front valence that attempts to improve the look and aerodynamic performance of the vehicle as well as adding a matte-silver underbody panel that will increase the ruggedness of the vehicle—yet I do not believe that many X6’s will wander off-road.

The X6’s cabin is lifted directly from the X5 with only minor detail changes; namely higher=quality materials and a more elegant design than the previous X6. A sizeable 10.2 inch infotainment screen, controlled by BMW’s iDrive is standard. Buyers can choose from a plethora of wood and aluminum trim options.

In terms of cargo capacity, it is less than the latest X5 from 66 cubic feet of space to 53.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The X6 will come with two power plant options – the X6 xDrive35i and the X6 xDrive50i. The xDrive35i will have a 300-horsepower, 300 lb-ft of torque turbocharged straight-six, the more powerful xDrive50i will boast the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 mill with 445-horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. The V8 is the same one found in the X5 xDrive50i and attains the same gain of 45-horspower and 35 lb-ft of torque over last year’s power-plant.

With an all-aluminum hood, plastic fenders and increased implantation of high-strength steel, BMW has been able to shed 35-55 lbs. from the X6’s curb weight, depending on optional equipment. That should help assist in the X6’s fuel economy. We will still have to wait for official ratings before we can make that claim formally.

For those that do not just want the base model, the Bavarian automaker will offer a luxurious xLine and performance focused M Sport trim levels. They will include an air suspension, Dynamic handling package and the wonderful Bang & Olufsen sound system are among the highlights from the massive options list.

The 2015 X6 is slated to hit the market later this year. Pricing will be revealed closer to the official launch date.
