Ward’s Automotive Names the ’10 Best Engines of 2014′

Ward's Automotive Names the '10 Best Engines of 2014'Want to know which engine will last and which won't? Well, Ward's Automotive has released it's annual list of the Best 10 engines available in the US auto market. Check it out!

For the 20th year in a row, Ward’s Automotive recently announced winners for its 2013 10 Best Engines Competition. The list of motors being touted for their abilities includes both naturally aspirated and turbocharged motors, diesel engines and even an electric motor. This list of top 10 was cut down from 44 different powertrains which were evaluated by Ward’s Automotive. The list is only limited to the engines available in the U.S. automotive market.

The following is the complete list of winners:

  • 3.0L TFSI Supercharged DOHC V-6 (Audi S5)
  • 3.0L Turbodiesel DOHC I-6 (BMW 535d)
  • 3.0L Turbodiesel DOHC V-6 (Ram 1500 EcoDiesel)
  • 83-kW Electric Motor (Fiat 500e)
  • 1.0L EcoBoost DOHC I-3 (Ford Fiesta)
  • 2.0L Turbodiesel DOHC I-4 (Chevrolet Cruze Diesel)
  • 6.2L OHV V-8 (Chevrolet Corvette Stingray)
  • 3.5L SOHC V-6 (Honda Accord)
  • 2.7L DOHC H-6 boxer (Porsche Cayman)
  • 1.8L Turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Volkswagen Jetta)

Interestingly enough, the list includes only two returning winners from the previous year, whereas usually about 4 engines are seen as repeat winners. The returning members of the list are Honda’s 3.5L V-6 and Audi’s phenomenal 3.0L V-6.

BMW has had the largest number of engines on this list in the past 20 years with 30 mentions over this time period. This year, they made the cut with their 3.0L turbodiesel inline 6 engine seen in the 535d and even the X5 CUV. This motor is known for it’s incredibly quite just impressive performance.

BMW’s infamous 3.0L inline-6 Turbodiesel definitely makes the cut.

The electric motor present is from the Fiat 500e electric vehicle which is a 83-kW unit. The motor is coupled with a 24-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack which provides for a solid 147 lb.ft of torque from the get go (one of the major advantages of having an EV) which is plenty for the tiny 500e. The 500e seems to have been an all-rounder for a great price however, it is currently only available in California.

Fiat 500e’s 83 kW motor is the only electric powertrain on the list, and it is great!

The list includes many more mentions and their details can be found in the article at the source link below.
