The ride of a lifetime | The sky turns grey as it spits down on the windshield, holding back the rain just long enough for me to realize a dream of mine.
The sky turns grey as it spits down on the windshield, holding back the rain just long enough for me to realize a dream of mine. I press the pedal down further and the engine barks to life behind me. I slip further back into my seat as the the exhaust grows louder and louder, only pausing briefly as I pull the paddle to continue the rush and noise further. Never did I think I would be here yet here I am at the wheel of a Ferrari 458, that glorious note filling the cabin, and the day has just begun.
Not long from now I’ll be behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Gallardo and then a McLaren MP4-12C. A statement I never thought I’d say. This day was all part of getting a brief look into what being a member is like, a member of Supercars Canada. Have you ever wanted to own an exotic car like a Ferrari or Lamborghini? Okay, silly question. Would you want to drive these cars without dealing with all the crazy expenses? A membership to Supercars Canada may be what you’re looking for.
Supercars Canada isn’t an exotic car rental company but rather a membership that gives you access to these cars at least once a month as well as access to track days and cruise events called discovery tours. With members being car enthusiasts and filtering out and potential risks, these cars are driven properly but not abused giving members a better confidence in the cars they take out. The line up includes a Ferrari 458, McLaren MP4-12C, Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spider, Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster, Nissan GTR and a Ferrari 430 Scuderia. A new car will be added to the line up in the near future as well. The cars range in price from $110,000 to $380,000 and have somewhere between 420hp and 616hp so nothing to scoff at.
Is a membership cheap? Well, no, not to most people. Access to these cars never comes cheap, but if you’re looking at buying a supercar then it is quite reasonable. So how does a membership for supercars work exactly? Good question as this is the only one of its kind around. After the initial cost and the monthly payments members have access to all of the cars to take out one day a month at no added cost and then there is a per kilometre rate for any extra days in the month. Members are guaranteed a weekday and weekend each month that they can book. If members are wanting to take the cars a far distance away from the Supercars Canada headquarters they can have the cars shipped to a location of their choosing. Outside of taking the cars for a day or two they can take part in track days and discovery tour cruises. The track days include laps in several cars from the fleet accompanied by a professional driver to help members experience the most from the cars. The discovery tour consists of taking out four cars from the fleet through the back roads near Burlington, I’m sure other locations would be open as well.
The interesting part of the membership is that it can be transferred. Why this is interesting is, for example, if you are a business owner and want to do something special for a client or a valued employee, you can transfer the membership to them for the desired time period. A while back I was invited to join my friend at a Raptors basketball game as he was given box seats through work. I enjoyed the experience, but if you’re like me, you find basketball boring, but it’s box seats so you’ll still go. Now imagine instead of getting box seats you got a day at the track in these cars with a professional driver. I couldn’t turn that down, and it would be a proper experience. There really is no comparison between the two when it comes to the experience and the thrill.
My day here is coming to an end, after jumping in the Lamborghini, then the McLaren, running into an E-type Jaguar and doing a quick photo shoot with the 458, MP4 and Jag I’m now back in the Ferrari, trying to get the most out of this last drive. The rain has been holding, mostly, but the drops are getting bigger and the roads more slick. Probably a good time to hand the keys back even though I don’t want this to end. Here’s to hoping that wasn’t the last time I’ll drive those cars. Maybe I’ll experience the best part of being a member and get to take the cars around Shannonville.
