New “Hellcat” HEMI to be a last hurrah for the Dodge Challenger

A "Hellcat" HEMI deserving of its name With 6.2L and 640 horsepower under the hood the HEMI’s code-name of “Hellcat” seems fitting, and it’ll put the Challenger on par with Chevrolet’s Camaro ZL1 and the Ford Shelby GT500.

When the competition is tough, sometimes you’ve got to go all-out to turn some heads, and it seems like Chrysler has an answer to its top competitors GM and Ford. According to recent reports from Automotive News, the automaker is getting ready for the launch of its new supercharged V8 HEMI engine, slated to appear in the next-generation Dodge Challenger.

Scheduled to debut as a 2015 model, it is unclear at this time whether the Hellcat engine will be available on the Challenger’s launch date, but when it does it will be paired with Chrysler’s latest eight-speed automatic transmission, and may eventually make its way under the hood of some other notable models in the Chrysler lineup.

That being said, timing will be a significant limiting factor for Chrysler, as it is unlikely that engines like the Hellcat will continue to be able to meet tighter CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) projections in the coming years.
