Luxury gets even more luxuriousInfiniti's latest luxury model has great ambitions
According to recent reports, Infinity is playing with the idea of debuting a high-end hybrid sports car, possibly as soon as 2016, as a way to boost brand awareness and and bring in new buyers. The goal is to increase global volume from 200,000 units sold in 2012 to 500,000 units by 2020.
If approved, the model will run on gas-electric technology (similar to that of the Emerg-E and Essence concept cars) and be targeted at the Asian market as that is where Infiniti expects majority of its growth to occur.
The Emerg-E features twin electric motors working alongside a 1.2L range-extending 3-cylinder in order to produce 402 horsepower while the Essence features a disc-shaped electric mill that works with a 3.7L V6 in order to produce a whopping 592 horsepower.
There are no reported plans to incorporate the Nissan GT-R’s 545 horsepower twin-turbo 3.8L V6 into the new model as Infiniti doesn’t find the engine suitable for luxury models.
