Honda fans are trying their hardest to get the new Type R to come to North America, something the automaker is thankful for but cannot guarantee.
After the unveil of the 2015 Civic Type R, American Honda fans are petitioning to bring the car to North America. The petition states that racing is a big part of Honda and the company’s background and all markets should have equal access to the automakers performance-focused products. So far, over 9,000 people have signed the petition.
Honda’s North American division acknowledged the petition and thanked fans for the support. The company said the message is coming through, but they cannot promise the Type R will be brought to North America. It would be an astonishing costly endeavor for the automaker to comply with U.S. emissions and safety regulations.
A turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine good for at least 280 horsepower will power the car, which is expected to appear in European showrooms in early 2015. The power will be sent to the front wheels through a manual transmission. In North America, the most powerful Civic is the Si Coupe which is powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that can push out 205 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque.
