Formula One: Hungarian Grand Prix Report

The Grand Prix of Hungry always seems to produce a surprising event, probably due to the “kart” track in a bowl on which it is held! This year was no exception as new results will attest to that!

After Fernando “2-time WC” Alonso’s surprising pole position in the improving R29 Renault while admittingly running low on fuel, and other surprises on the grid, the cards were lining up for a very intriguing event. The weather was good but the mood was not since Felipe “bad luck” Massa suffered a serious injury in Qualifying due to a part falling off of the Brawn GPB-01 of Ruben “I’m a whiner” Barrachello and bouncing into his helmet’s face shield. The coil spring may have actually hit the driver support column next to the drivers head and then struck him from that ricochet. I still do not understand why F1 driver’s faces are no longer protected by some kind of windshield! That might have prevented Massa’s injury from happening at all! Certainly, if all teams are mandated to have a certain spec of wind screen this accidents may not have or at least not as severely since the wind screen can absorb some the damage or defuse some of that errant energy! It might have also helped prevent poor Henry Surtees death the week earlier when a tire assembly bounced into his driver cockpit and killed him instantly. Sad – sad news this week. Yes, racing is dangerous and we all know that, but there are safety issues yet to be considered that could have prevented these travesties from occurring.

The race begins well for Alonso in the R29 as he breaks away into the lead and starts slowly pulling away. Lewis “where have you been” Hamilton makes yet another brilliant start in the also improving McLaren MP4/24 and this time does not collide with another car therefore ending his challenge, but takes off after Mark “I broke my duck” Webber’s RB5 Red Bull. Meanwhile, Jensen “I’m the best there ever was” Button was not having the race pace he anticipated in the rapidly going backwards Brawn GPB-01 car.

Soon, however a faulty pit stop for leader Fernando “my teammate sucks bananas” Alonso turns to pure disaster as the right front wheel/tire assembly come off while back out on the track and the team did not even bother to inform him of the problem! The FIA has stated that Renault has been banned from the next event at European GP! Radical actions indeed, since to error is human and to deny the team entry is ridiculous, since it will be held in Spain where many ticket holders were anticipating Alonso’s appearance. And why therefore was the Brawn team not also banned for allowing a significantly dangerous part to fall off their race car and injury Felipe Massa?

Anyway, thanks to a huge effort from the huge staff at McLaren and also the best KERS system in GP racing, Lewis “my girlfriend is a rock star” Hamilton was able to dominate the later stages of the race and take a much needed victory for the team.

So once again Hungry delivers a surprising event!
