Formula One Today
“Formula 1”, where do I begin? Is there even an “American” perspective on Formula One in the first place? Yes indeed I believe there is! Believe it or not there are many of fanatical fans of F1 in the Americas, North and South and that means the US as well. Let us view, review and generally comment on the state of the union, so to speak, of the world of F1!
Is there a conspiracy afloat to destroy F1 and road racing of all types? Could be…! If it wasn’t broke, then why fix/ruin it? Let’s examine the facts:
- The constant turmoil in Formula 1 and the extreme maybe severe politics that do not seem to have the very spirit of the sport at heart and most certainly not the fan base.
- This negativity is driving away potential sponsors for the teams who rely on these funds to justify their existence, since the owners F1 hold on to most of the cash.
- The teasing and taunting of the most established of the F1 ranks constantly daring them to go away mad regardless of the possible consequences to the rich heritage of this sport.
- The overly homogenizing of the entire various new “feeder” classes into humorless spec series examples such as the IRL, GP2, F2. GP3, F-Atlantic and soon F1 into GP1.
- Sacrificing the poor and elegant “F3”, a wonderful and open-chassis and engine class series, that will almost certainly be sterilized into a dummied down less-than series if this FIA trend continues squeezing more unneeded formula “feeder” series into the overly crowed schedules each year.
- Constant rule changes that themselves drive the costs associated with operating within the sport, then mandating new lower budgets while still retaining the vast majority of profits from promoter fees and TV revenues.
Formula 1 is being destroyed, plain and simple! It is the work of two men who care only about their own gigantic egos and publicity. What two men you ask? Why it’s Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone that’s who! Max Mosley, recently in a starring role in a Mini-Nazi-Sex drama, is apparently out to destroy the entire world of F1 for whom he blames for this situation (meaning he got caught!).
If the racing isn’t attractive in F1, then politics must spice it up! Spice-it-up in the most negative of ways possible by insulting the great cornerstone of teams, Ferrari! F1 cannot and probably should not survive without Ferrari! Yeah, I said it! F1 would probably never have made it this long without the spirit that Enzo infused into his blood red racing thoroughbreds! Antagonist and protagonist both! A target for every team to aspire to, a model organization to serve as the prototype of how to do it right. For so long always there during the good and the bad years, but always there!
Yes, F1 is the biggest show in all of sports and they are doing everything they can each year to destroy it with unending controversy and disorder. “Spygate” this, “liargate” that, scandalgate the other and rules guaranteed to ruin it every time including the proposal to dummy-down F1 into GP1,by mandating spec engines and soon after that spec cars. Phony George has proven time and time again that you can ruin a great thing if you keep at it! The Indy 500 truly used to be one of the great sporting events of the year, and not only among auto-racing fans. Now, the great Imitation Racing League runs the biggest bore event of May. The fore gone days of the excitement of different chassis using different power-plants driven by daring men young and old who were truly were risking their lives each Memorial Day to win the “world’s greatest spectacle”.
F1 is heading that very same direction and Max and Bernie won’t stop until they have massacred the entire entry list and replaced them with “GP3”! Bernie, who has always focused on the massive cash cow that the F1 series is, seems to has lost that focus and now wants to ruin F1 and choke the life out of it by bleeding the organizers and insulting the teams just like Max does on a regular basis. Also, why exactly did we need “F2” and “GP3” anyway? More classes to dilute the impact of F3, and that in itself is a wonderful “mini-F1” open-equipment category. Even though Dallara still dominates, there are always new constructors that rise to challenge that supremacy!
Except for “USGP1” who seem by every right to be legitimate since they announced themselves long before “budgetgate” took over the future of this sport, all the other entrants should try starting in F3 and if they can beat Dallara there, then they have a chance to compete in F1.
Who stole the golden goose? The Max and Bernie Show did and replaced it with their own insecure egos. These men have insulted Ferrari, raped the promoters, move the series away from North America threatening Europe, insulted the drivers, want to dummy-down the formula, failed to keep agreements with the constructers and are creating more junior spec formulas to utterly confuse the audience to turn away.
Will Max and Bernie ever learn? Don’t count on it! Arrogance has no teacher, just a full classroom of students. Mix large quantities of ego, greed, arrogance, ineptitude, money and not necessarily in that order, is sure-fire the recipe for disaster. Maybe F1 should resort to karting classes and making it affordable for every child to now be in F1…
