2012 Range Rover Sport Supercharged

For the first time ever, I had the privilege of enjoying a vehicle that embodies an entire state.  When sitting in the 2012 Range Rover Sport Supercharged, one cannot help but feel like they are escaping to the hills and valleys of California.  Your first thought is to turn the radio on to some hip/hop or rap, roll down the windows and just cruise.

Thoughts then begin to swirl through your head that you’re better than everyone else on the road.  On the highway it gets even better, through the use of its supercharged 5.0L V8 engine warping space and time is achievable and permits you to pass anyone slower than you with a rumble and snap.  The latter being your neck.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair…

And yet I found myself enjoying the Range Rover more at night.  With empty roads and no distractions.  Equipped with six different handling settings I found myself using the Dynamic setting the most.  Unlike most SUVs, the Range Rover didn’t suffer from intense body roll and seemed to handle almost car like.  Unfortunately for me, I didn’t dare take it off-roading and would rather use its abilities to solve world peace and hunger.

Rising up through the air…

Outside of the vehicle settings, there’s this little button right beside you that makes you play with the height adjustment settings.  I do wish that upon reaching certain speed milestones that the SUV did not re-adjust itself to the normal setting.  I’d much rather have it on the lower height and gain some handling and aerodynamic perks.  In the summer months I cannot see a reason for the extra ride height.

I saw a shimmering light…

Sometimes living in the country can provide some dangerous situations.  Namely deers.  In a lot of cases you feel nervous going down side roads and stick to the longer main roads.  The Range Rover allowed me to get home with the high beam light spread encompassing two story homes.  I have never seen headlights quite as effective as those.  It was a great feeling being able to see everything surrounding the road, a full kilometre ahead and every nuance presented to you by the road itself.

Had to stop for the night…

Upon arriving home, you can’t help but feel a little sad that you aren’t driving it anymore.  That is until you look at your gas gauge and realized you just burned through an observed 15.5L/100 KM on premium gas.  With a quick poof, you get a devil and angel appear on both your shoulders as they begin to argue over the merits and downside of continually driving.  An argument that is completely one sided with the little devil winning each and every time.  The Angel hipster doesn’t stand a chance.

This could be heaven or this could be hell…

The only problem that I came across was a real finicky trunk lid that decided on its own free will when and if it will work.  It makes you wonder whether the Range Rover is also home to some gremlins that would appear throughout your ownership experience.  Being notorious for a lack of reliability it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

She showed me the way…

The in-car electronics of the Range Rover Sport were quite impressive.  Featuring an intuitive touch screen design, two rear headrest LCDs and the niftiest remote control that I’ve ever seen. Shaped similarly to a GameBoy, it allows the rear passengers to control what’s viewable on their screens without bugging the driver.  It’s something that many other automotive manufacturers should consider.

Overall, upon returning the keys I couldn’t help but feel that my time with the Range Rover was too short.  I instantly wished that it would last forever but like most things in life, all good things must come to an end.  And with that I must say…

Welcome to the Hotel California, such a lovely place…
